Acts of Repair: Justice, Truth, and the Politics of Memory

Acts of Repair se enfoca en cómo la gente vive con los legados de la violencia política en Argentina, un país con sobrevivientes de la Shoá, la dictadura de 1976 – 83, y el atentado a la AMIA de 1994. Tras la violencia, los sobrevivientes han luchado con el trauma y con un terreno de justicia que ha sido irregular. ¿Cómo se contiende con la posibilidad que la justicia nunca llegue? ¿Cómo se responde a este trauma continuo? Desde la perspectiva de la justicia transnacional, ¿cuáles son los horizontes de reparación social? Mediante su investigación etnográfica en la vida diaria y en historias de sobrevivientes y ciudadanos, Natasha Zaretsky analiza el significado de la memoria como respuesta al trauma y la injusticia, explorando testimonios, actos, manifestaciones públicas, entre otras prácticas culturales. Propone que aún si la posibilidad de reparación fuera incompleta y fundamentalmente liminal, tras sus esfuerzos para lograr reparación personal y colectiva, los argentinos también abren espacios de transformación y conciencia. Además, vemos como a través de estos “acts of repair,” pueden establecer nuevas formas de subjetividad política que son importantes para que puedan seguir adelante los ciudadanos y sobrevivientes, tanto en lo personal como en lo político.
Natasha Zaretsky, Ph.D. is a cultural anthropologist who works on human rights, genocide, and the politics of memory in the Americas and the Jewish diaspora. She has published extensively in the fields of human rights, anthropology, Jewish Studies, and Latin American Studies, especially focusing on Jews in Argentina. She is also working on new research on memory and belonging with Soviet Jews in New York, and the future of Holocaust memory at a time of rising nationalism in Europe. She now teaches at New York University and is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University, where she leads the Truth in the Americas program. She co-edited Landscapes of Memory and Impunity (with Annette Levine; Brill 2015), which examines the impact of the AMIA attack for Argentina’s Jewish community. Her latest book, Acts of Repair: Justice, Truth, and the Politics of Memory in Argentina (Rutgers University Press 2021), explores memory and survival in the aftermath of genocide and political violence in Argentina. She is also currently completing a documentary film about the aftermath of the AMIA bombing in Argentina, 1000 Mondays.
